Freaks by Lisa M Forester
Synopsis
Nobody's perfect... or are they?
Abigail always knew that she was different, but what she didn't know was just how different.
That was until her 16th birthday, when her parent's revealed a devastating secret that confirmed her worst fears and changed her life forever.
Abigail is an Allelobrid: one of five children born as a result of their parents illegal science experiment in genetic engineering. The aim: to create a perfect human.
Yet perfection comes at a price.
Forced into a life on the run, Abigail finds love, danger and an organisation that will stop at nothing to get what they want.
When lives are at risk and freedom is threatened - could being perfect be enough to survive?

An Introduction to Freaks - by Lisa M Forester
Hello Bookish Treasures readers! It is so lovely to be here, and so lovely that Laura has allowed me to drop in. Thanks Laura!
So, I’m Lisa M. Forester (to be precise!) and my debut Young Adult novel ‘FREAKS’ is set for release on the 28th of November 2013. To say that I am hugely excited about this is an understatement. Writing a book is an amazing, fun experience and it zaps away hours of your life as you find yourself transported to a new world filled with characters that you have made and places that you’ve designed. It’s completely therapeutic and I would recommend it to anyone. Why live in the real world when you can create your own fantasy? Even if it does only last for an hour or so when you find some time in your day to sit quietly.
I write YA fiction because it allows me to stretch my imagination to a place that has no boundaries. No limits. Don’t get me wrong – I enjoy reading other genres, but when I’m writing I don’t want to have to think about the practicalities of everyday existence. I don’t want to have my main character worrying about bills or having to nip to the shop because they’ve run out of milk. I want my characters to be free to be whatever they want to be. I want them to save the world. I want them to take the reader to a place beyond homework, and I want to go to that place too!
FREAKS is half set in the UK and half set in the USA – and it’s written from the perspective of 16 year old Abigail. She’s always known that she was different – but she has just found out that she is an Allelobrid: one of five children that were genetically modified to be perfect. She was created in a science lab by her parents, and is ultimately a perfect human being. She will never get sick and she will never grow old – she is practically perfect in every way. But, as the blurb on the back of the book says – perfection comes at a price! Abigail is forced into a life on the run by an organisation that will stop at nothing to get their hands on her. Woven into FREAKS are elements of love, danger, death and friendship, and I hope that people will love reading it as much as I loved writing it.
I have no idea where I got the idea for FREAKS. I’d love to have some awesome story about how the characters came to me in a dream ala Stephenie Meyer, or how I grabbed the idea whilst flicking through the television channels ala Suzanne Collins – but I don’t. FREAKS just happened. I sat behind my laptop, started typing and this book is the outcome. The characters were born from a corner of my brain that I didn’t even know existed – and I adore each and every one of them. Their names were plucked from my imagination as I typed - as the character was formed, their name just appeared. They aren’t named after anyone in particular – their names just fit. And the location just happened too – when I needed a place for FREAKS to be set, I stumbled upon the perfect town (which just so happens to be Lincoln, Alabama – in case you were wondering). The ease at which I wrote made the whole writing experience very enjoyable indeed.
Now the time is approaching to share FREAKS with the world, I find myself with a near constant feeling of butterflies in my stomach. This world has been so sacred to me (and my beta readers) for so long – exposing it to the elements makes me feel very vulnerable indeed.
But it’s exciting, y’know? It’s so incredibly exciting that I would absolutely encourage anyone, anywhere, to pick up a pen, or sit behind a laptop, or scribble on the back of an envelope if that’s all you have… and start writing. Write anything! Write a book. Write a short story. Write a poem. Write anything that comes into your head and live your dreams through your words. Then, when you eventually get to see your words in print, sat behind an awesome cover, with a nice little barcode stamped on the back – you’ll find that those dreams have absolutely come true.
