Want to help me out AND get a short story published both at the same time?

26 Nov 2014
As is quite clear to see Bookish Treasures hasn't been the most active of blogs lately. One of the reasons for this is that at the end of September I started a masters degree in publishing and I have been spending a lot of time trying to make all my assignments and projects utterly amazing.

We have a major project on the course instead of a dissertation and this is essentially conceptualising and producing a book. I am doing this with one other girl and we are at the stage now where we have just done a call out for writers and illustrators to submit proposals to be considered as a contributor for the book which is an anthology of dark, gothic fairytales suitable for a crossover YA/Adult audience.

I thought I would share the callout here in case anyone is interested in getting involved! There will be no payment (sorry!) as UCLan publishing is a not for profit company but if chosen you will get the experience of going through the editorial process with me and my partner with the assistance of top publishing professionals and at the end you will get a copy of the book. If their is money in the budget for a print run it will also be properly published through the small publishing house attached to my University that does many of the major projects.

Illustrators & Writers Wanted!

For a new gothic fairytale book for adults
We are producing a Gothic fairy tale book for adults with a completion date of August 2015.

We can’t offer you payment but we can offer you a printed copy of the finished book and the chance to work with publishers.
To apply please send a sample of your work and a 300 word summary about why you are interested in the project to uclanfairytales@gmail.com by 19th December

Top Ten Books On My Winter TBR

25 Nov 2014

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

Today I am sharing ten of the books I plan to read over the Winter months. I haven't planned too much of my reading for the next few months so these are pretty much the only books I currently have set plans to read soon :P Some of these are books I have, others are releasing shortly and I plan to get them as soon as I can.

The Fire Sermon - UK - This is a YA dystopian novel and I received an incredibly pretty arc of it last month that I am DYING to read. As it is a February release, over Christmas will be the perfect time for me to read it.

The Walled City - UK - This released earlier this month and I recently received a review copy from the publisher so I plan to dive into shortly.

Wicked - UK - This is a New Adult paranormal novel by one of my favourite authors so I am very eager to read it. Wicked releases December 8th and I plan to get myself a copy to read pretty quickly.

Anatomy of a Misfit - UK - I have had this book for a while now but simply haven't had the time to read it. It sounds fantastic so I look forwards to reading it over the Christmas holidays :)

Dark Bites - UK - This book is a collection of short stories by Sherrilyn Kenyon, I have read some of her books previously and she is a fantastic writer so I'm looking forwards to reading this paperback I received for review. This book also just released today!

Shooting Scars - UK - This just popped through my letterbox and I was really excited to receive it so I am going to start on reading this really soon.

Seeker - UK - This is a YA fantasy novel releasing next year and it sounds absolutely fanastic! I am trying to start scheduling more reviews in advance so reading this over Christmas will be perfect for a review around release.

Under Different Stars - UK - This is an amazing sounding fantasy / sci-fi romance novel by the incredible Amy Bartol. I only just got this but is exactly what I am feeling like reading at the moment so it is going to get a bit of a bump up my tbr pile :)

A Touch Of Midnight - UK - I have had this PNR on my kindle for ages and this winter is when I am finally going to read it :P

The Body Electric - UK -  I love Beth Revis and this is the first in a new series by her and as I have an ebook I will read it soon.

What do you plan to read this winter? Feel free to share your own Top Ten Tuesday links in the comments :)

9 Nov 2014
As it is currently New Adult paranormal month here on Bookish Treasures I thought it would be nice for me to share a few fantastic books that are currently free (at the time of writing this post - I cannot control how long books are free for) ! I have read all of these books and would give them all at least 4 stars.

THE TEMPERING by Adrianne James

The Mythology department at prestigious Harvard University is tiny—and Mackenzie Duncan has just been selected as one of the lucky few. Her love for myths and legends is strong, but she never thought any of it could be real.

After being attacked by a large wolf while walking home alone, Mackenzie realizes something is not right. She heals quickly, is suddenly super strong, and is experiencing mood swings that can't possibly be normal. The myths she's studying aren't myths at all. Werewolves are real and she's one of them. Fear of what she is, and who she might hurt sends Mackenzie running from the life she’s worked hard to build–and straight into the arms of a handsome Were named Geoff and into the home of his pack. Living with her new pack takes the edge off her confusion and self-loathing, but the arrival of new pack members changes the dynamic, and tests Geoff and Mackenzie’s growing relationship.

The hardest part of being a werewolf is having no control and no memory of her time as a blood thirsty beast. When a moon cycle passes and she actually remembers bits and pieces of the night, she starts to ask questions, and the more questions she asks, the more she realizes she doesn't like the answers. Can she set aside her own sense of morals to belong to a pack that is like a family or will she leave everything behind yet again in search of a life she can be proud of?

Ember Brycin has been called them all. She’s always known she’s different. No one has ever called her normal, even under the best circumstances. LOVE IS DARKNESS by Caroline Hanson

Valerie Dearborn wants a cotton candy life, but it’s more like a puffer fish: pointy, unusual, and—if not prepared exactly right—deadly.

In London for graduate school, Val knows she's finally free. Her father and ex-almost-boyfriend are back in California and she's out of the Vampire hunting biz for good. Or is she?

She draws the attention of Lucas, a 1600 year old Vampire, and King to his kind. He’s also wicked hot. As golden as Lucifer, and just as tempting, he makes Valerie an offer she can't refuse— help him find out if the Others (Empaths, Fey and Werewolves) still exist or he'll stop protecting those she loves.

Lucas tells her that Empaths were a Vampire’s biggest weakness before going extinct hundreds of years ago. While the Fey or a Werewolf might kill a Vampire, an Empath could enslave them, seducing or harming with emotions at will. The one detail he leaves out? Valerie is an Empath.

And after 1600 years of an emotionless existence, Lucas wants Valerie like a recovering alcoholic wants a wine cooler.

Can she keep those she loves alive, stop Lucas from munching on her, survive a fanged revolution and still find a way to have that boring, normal life she’s always wanted? Probably not, but boy is she gonna try!

This is a full length novel and contains adult content.

Review

This was definitely a unique werewolf read.  Sure, the werewolf lore is the same as most every book out there, but the plot draws absolutely no comparisons in my mind, which is impressive in and of itself.  I loved how the two characters found each other at their absolute lowest.  They had pretty much given up on life.  But a little compassion and companionship goes a long way in healing some wounds.  It wasn't quite as simple as that, of course, but that certainly was the start.

This was a well-rounded story.  We got a good look at the hero in both wolf and human form, elementals, desperation, loss, friendship, hope, love, lust and... a pretty intense final showdown.  I loved that the heroine is surrounded by friends and family that are loyal and protective of her.  I think it would have been far too depressing in the beginning otherwise.  This was also not a story where sex makes up a large portion of the content.  In fact, it takes quite a while for things to even progress to that point.  There is an insta-connection, but I would not classify it as insta-love by any means.  The heroine is really quite pragmatic in that manner.

The book is the first in a series but it is not a cliffhanger.  The main story arc wraps up tidily at the end so fear not.  It looks like the next book in the series revolves around different characters but the hero and heroine's story from this book isn't quite done so I'm sure they will make a reappearance.  This was also well edited, or at least it was so engrossing I didn't notice a single typo, so either way it is a great choice.

Try it for yourself! Goodreads | Amazon | Amazon UK
