Review of Walking Disaster

Walking Disaster by Jamie McGuire

Walking Disaster

Synopsis

Finally, the highly anticipated follow-up to the New York Times bestseller Beautiful Disaster. Can you love someone too much?
Travis Maddox learned two things from his mother before she died: Love hard. Fight harder.

In Walking Disaster, the life of Travis is full of fast women, underground gambling, and violence. But just when he thinks he is invincible, Abby Abernathy brings him to his knees.

Every story has two sides. In Beautiful Disaster, Abby had her say. Now it’s time to see the story through Travis’s eyes.

Review

“I know we're fucked up, alright? I'm impulsive, and hot tempered, and you get under my skin like no one else. You act like you hate me one minute, and then need me the next. I never get anything right, and I don't deserve you...but I fucking love you, Abby. I love you more than I loved anyone or anything ever. When you're around, I don't need booze, or money, or the fighting, or the one-night stands...” - Beautiful Disaster

Beautiful Disaster was my favourite book of 2011 so naturally ever since I first heard about Walking Disaster I was excitedly and anxiously waiting until I could get a copy. My feelings during the wait were mixed; on one hand it was a brand new book by one of my favourite authors, it was going to have all the characters that I loved in the first book and most importantly it was going to be the story of Beautiful Disaster from Travis’s point of view! However, on the other hand it was going to be the exact same story just from a new point of view. I was worried that it might be repetitive and possibly even boring. Luckily it wasn’t.
I LOVED Walking Disaster. Despite being the same storyline the author made it fresh and new. It just goes to show how different things can seem when you are looking through someone else’s eyes. Rather than repeating what we already know conversational scenes are briefly mentioned and the main focus is on the things we never got to see in Beautiful Disaster. I would recommend having read the first book recently so all the events are fresh in your mind and you can fully appreciate this book. However at a push you could probably read this entirely as a standalone but I think you will love it more if you know Abbi’s side of the story first.

“To douchebags!" he said, gesturing to Brad. "And to girls that break your heart," he bowed his head to me. His eyes lost focus. "And to the absolute fucking horror of losing your best friend because you were stupid enough to fall in love with her.” - Beautiful Disaster

For anyone who didn’t like Travis in Beautiful Disaster (apparently you do exist) I think he will win you over in this book. Seeing his reasons for things and his thoughts about certain situations actually made me a little mad at Abbi for not being more understanding. I challenge you to try to read this book and not fall in love with Travis; he just seems so sweet and caring though also out of his depth as he has never been in love before.

Some things get explained in this book too, such as where the nickname pigeon came from; who knew a name like pigeon could have such a sweet meaning. Both books will merge in your head to give you such a complete understanding of the story unlike anything you have ever experienced before. Together the two books make the ultimate book! Travis and Abbi are one of my favourite book couples of all time because neither of them are perfect nor is their relationship perfect but they love each other, need each other and fight to be together.

I am very happy to say that Walking Disaster was just as good as I hoped it would be, if not better! I now can’t wait to see what Jamie McGuire will bring next, all her books are so amazing that I would buy pretty much anything she writes.

*I received a free ecopy of this book from the publisher via netgalley in exchange for an honest review, this has not affected my opinions nor the book rating in any way. A HUGE thank you to Atria for letting me read this book before it released.*
