The Ups and Downs of Having a Facebook Page

17 Dec 2013
Now I love the facebook page for my blog. It's a great way for me to share the little things that don't get posted about on here such as some new releases, heavily discounted books, amazing freebie reads and more. I also love getting updates from the pages that I follow; it helps prevent me from missing so much book news.

The only problem is facebook keeps on reducing the percentage of people who will see posts by pages that they have Liked.

On average only about 5% of people who like the facebook page for this blog see each post, sometimes as little as 1% and never any more than 10%. This is due to facebook only showing a limited amount of people posts from pages. You could be on facebook at the exact same time I post something but it may not appear in your newsfeed. The only way I can guarantee that everyone will see my posts is to pay money - a minimum of

Facebooks new algorithm rewards fan engagement. The more you comment on and like posts from a particular page the more likely you and also other people are to see said post. It ends up becoming a vicious circle as you will mainly only see posts from pages that you have recently interacted with eg. commented on or liked a post but this means you then wont see other pages stuff to comment on or like.

There are ways around this -

1) Make sure to "like" posts that you like. Its all to easy to read a post, follow its link, but not actually interact with it in a way that facebook notices. If you like any blogs/authors on facebook and want to keep seeing their posts in your newsfeed then pop over and comment (or just like) one of their recent posts.

2) If you go onto a page and hover over its "like" button several options should appear. One of these is "Get notifications" and if you select this you will receive a notification for every post done by that page. This is probably best to be done only for a few select pages otherwise you will get hundreds of notifications a day!

3) Next to the "Like" button is an option to "Follow". If you select this then all of the pages posts will appear in your newsfeed. This button is basically what we all expected "Like" to be.

So if you don't want to stop seeing facebook posts from your favourite blogs, authors and other pages then go and do one of these things now. I am currently going through my favourite authors and clicking "follow" on their facebook pages :D

Other bloggers, do you bother with a facebook page?

  1. I never knew most of this! Thanks for sharing! I currently don't have a facebook page for my blog. I just have a Twitter and a goodreads account. I'm not sure If I will ever get one because it seems like it would be a lot of work. We shall see.

  2. OMG, I could have sworn I liked your page AGES ago. Grrr. Fixed. And now, when you like a page, the "follow" is automatically applied. I'm guessing this is not retroactive :-/

    1. It's very easy to just assume you have already liked a page :) And no I don't think it is retroactive

  3. Thanks for posting about this. I don't think most people realize how much they miss from their favorite pages.

  4. I liked your page and it automatically set me as following, but I think for pages we already liked we might need to go and click 'follow'. I agree this whole facebook thing is SO frustrating! It's definitely good for the blog, but working to make it so people actually SEE the posts is a major pain in the butt. Hopefully with more people spreading the word on how to actually see posts we can all see in an increase in how many people see them. I try to make a point to go through and like posts as much as possible so I'll continue to see them.

    1. I remember your discussion in the past about this Candace and how you tried the BOOST option and how it's really not worth it.

I'm really not a social blogger, I rarely linger around Twitter or FB, I'm usually just in or out. But I do get how frustrating it is sometimes especially if you're trying to get promote something you really believe in. I guess for now we just have to do the best we can.

      Happy holidays!

      P.S. I'm a new follower
